2. Design: All of these engines used a two-stroke cycle, with 12 pistons sharing six cylinders, and top-of-piston to top-of-piston in an opposed configuration. This unusual configuration required two crankshafts, one at the bottom of the cylinder block and the other at the top, to be geared together. The pistons move close to each other during the operating cycle. The intake port is located at one end of the cylinder and the exhaust port at the other. This allows one piston to effectively control the intake and the other piston to control the exhaust. Each cylinder uses two cam-operated injection pumps, each pump supplying oil to two nozzles, for a total of four nozzles per cylinder.
