1.Background: In 1936, Junkers engineer Dr. Johannes Gasterstädt designed an opposed-piston engine configuration that could achieve 2,000 horsepower (1,490 kilowatts) in a compact package suitable for aircraft use. The configuration consists of four cylinder banks at 90-degree angles to each other, so they form a rhombus - a square balanced at one point (◇). The pistons of two neighboring cylinder banks are connected to a crankshaft located at each corner of the rhombus. Each cylinder bank has six cylinders. A complete engine has four crankshafts, 24 cylinders, and 48 pistons.
The engine study of the Junkers lozenge configuration was named the P2000. Dr. Gasterstädt died in 1937, and Professor Otto Mader and Manfred Gerlach took over the P2000 project. By the end of 1937, a single-cylinder test engine and a complete six-cylinder block had been built and operated, and in April 1938, the RLM (German Ministry of Aeronautics) renamed the P2000 engine the Jumo 223. By December 1939, a full-size Jumo 223 engine had been completed, and the engine was broken-in by a dynamometer (a dynamometer for rotating engines) in January 1940. 2. Design: The Jumo 223 was one of the most unusual engines ever built. The engine consists of two large, complex aluminum castings - one at the front of the engine and one at the rear. Each casting houses four sets of three-cylinder engines. A large central gear is located in the center of the engine where the two castings join. Each crankshaft consists of two main sections bolted together by means of the gear at its center. A gear on each crankshaft meshes with the center gear, transmitting power from the crankshaft to the center gear. The driveshaft passes through the center of the engine from the front and rear of the central gear. The rear shaft passes through a series of other gears to power the engine's blower (weak supercharger) and accessories. The front shaft leads to the propeller.
