History:
The Chevrolet small-block engine is a series of gasoline-powered V8 automobile engines produced by the Chevrolet division of General Motors between 1954 and 2003, using the same basic engine block. Known as the “small-block” because of its much larger size relative to the Chevrolet big-block engine, engineer Ed Cole is credited with leading the design of the engine. The engine block and cylinder heads were cast at the Saginaw Metal Foundry in Saginaw, Michigan.
The first generation of Chevrolet small-block engines began with the 1955 Chevrolet V8 engine used in the Corvette and Bel Air. The engine quickly became popular among racers and was nicknamed the “Mighty Mouse” after the popular cartoon character of the time, later shortened to “Mouse”. It was equipped with optional Rochester mechanical fuel injection and a Duntov high-lift camshaft. From 1954 to 1974, the small-block engine was known as the “turbocharged” or “high-torque” V8. Equipped with a screw-type supercharger, it was the most widely used small-block engine of all time, ranging from station wagons and sports cars, to commercial vehicles, boats, industrial equipment, and even (highly modified) airplanes. The most widely used small engine ever.
Its small size + low cost + reliability and durability have made it a huge hit in the tuning scene around the world, and there's absolutely no denying its appeal.
Over the years, the engine has gone through some pretty extensive changes, resulting in over 17 variants. However, one of the defining parts of Chevrolet engines is their interchangeability. Many of the shared parts, such as connecting rods, pistons, and other internals, will fit virtually any 350 engine. Put newer pistons and rods in without much trouble.
