Background information: As European aircraft designs had far surpassed those of the United States, in the late 1930's many aircraft manufacturers were asked to provide programs for high-performance airplanes that would propel the U.S. industry forward. These airplanes were to be powered by so-called Hyper engines. Initially, variants of the inverted V-12 and H-24 were selected as Hyper engines, and a year later, four other engines were added to the program. One of these four engines was a 42-cylinder, 7-group engine proposed by Curtiss-Wright called the Wright R-2160 Tornado. The idea was to increase the amount of fuel converted to useful power per second by increasing engine speed. The effect of moving mass internally included, among other things, a reduction in piston weight, and as a result, the R-2160 was a relatively small engine with a displacement of 2,160 cubic inches. Reduction gears were used in order to turn the propeller at an optimum speed. All of the Hyper engine projects were ultimately canceled, and ironically, engines that were not considered for the program, such as the Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp and the Wright R-3350 Duplex-Cyclone (two 18-cylinder twin-row engines) and the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major (a 28-cylinder, four-row engine), exceeded requirements and were produced in large numbers. These engines are shown in MOC's 159400 and 154089; this MOC is a model of the 42-cylinder Star engine.
